Smartphone Overuse Harms Brain & Academics – 3 Tips to Protect Your Child

As smartphones become ubiquitous, children’s screen addiction is a growing concern. Research from Professor Ryuta Kawashima at Tohoku University’s Institute of Development, Aging, and Cancer shows that excessive use of electronic devices not only affects academics but may also impede brain development. How can parents respond? Here are key insights and practical tips.

Research Findings: How Smartphones Affect Children 💬

Since 2010, Professor Kawashima’s team has tracked approximately 70,000 elementary and middle school students in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, for a decade, uncovering the following issues:

Academic Decline : Using smartphones, TVs, or gaming consoles for more than 1 hour daily significantly lowers students’ grades in subjects like math, Japanese, science, and social studies, impacting logical thinking, memory, and attention.

Ineffective Studying : Even with over 2 hours of daily study, students using smartphones for more than 3 hours perform worse than those who don’t study but avoid smartphones.

Delayed Brain Development : MRI scans reveal that prolonged smartphone use stalls brain development, particularly in the white matter neural networks connecting brain regions, with about one-third of areas showing little to no progress.

These findings indicate that the negative effects of smartphone use go beyond reduced study or sleep time, directly impairing learning ability and cognitive development.

What Can Parents Do? 3 Practical Tips 📌

To protect children’s academics and brain health, Professor Kawashima offers the following suggestions:

Set Clear Rules Prohibit school-age children from using smartphones before studying or sleeping to avoid disrupting focus and sleep quality. Never allow phones to charge by the bedside.

Lead by Example Parents’ smartphone habits influence children. Families should set shared rules, such as no phones during meals or family time, to foster healthy habits.

Monitor Screen Time Ensure children’s daily screen time stays under 1 hour, leaving more time for reading, exercise, or family interaction to promote brain and academic development.

Take Action to Safeguard Your Child’s Future 💪🏻

Children’s academic success and brain development are irreversible investments. By establishing healthy smartphone habits now, parents can boost their children’s academic performance and lay a strong foundation for their future. Let’s work together to create an environment that supports children’s growth!
